The Spotlight Artist programming is the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s unique way of incorporating professional artists into our arts programming. Using elements from the artist’s techniques, materials, and/or concepts, our young visitors can begin to build connections to the art world. These projects run every day on our Studio 5 project table and twice weekly in Art Lab.

Art Lab is a process-oriented workshop especially designed to give children and their caregivers the opportunity to delve one step further and explore deeper the materials, processes, and/or ideas of the chosen artist of the month.

April's Spotlight Artist: Stephanie Imbeau

Stephanie Imbeau is a Brooklyn based installation and sculpture artist. Her internationally exhibited work explores themes of community and isolation by utilizing materials relating to domesticity. Shelter, a large-scale installation commissioned by the British TV network Channel Four, exemplifies her practice. The sculpture stands five stories high and is made completely from found, broken, or discarded umbrellas.

This April in Studio 5 we will be creating with umbrellas both large and small. Reimagine the umbrella form using deconstructed umbrella parts and cocktail umbrellas to create a collaborative installation or personal sculpture. Stop by Art Lab where you can experiment with vibrant colors and observe how paint reacts on umbrellas much like water does.
