    Your privacy is important to us at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. We are committed to safeguarding personal information collected online and to helping parents and children exercise control over personal information while exploring the Internet. We do not sell, trade, or share a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations. Our information collection practices are described below in greater detail. We urge kids to check with their parents before entering information on any website and we urge parents to discuss with their kids restrictions regarding the online release of personal information to anyone they don’t know.

    What Information is Collected?

    At the Bay Area Discovery Museum, it is our policy to create website content that requires the minimum collection of information from our visitors. No personal information is collected from our users unless the user chooses to provide such information. Registration is not required to access any information or participate in any activities on our site, and you can surf through most areas of our site without providing any personally identifiable information (such as name, address, email address, or telephone number) about yourself.

    Certain areas of our website allow parents and guardians the opportunity to voluntarily provide personal information about themselves and their children in order to become Bay Area Discovery Museum members or learn more about the Bay Area Discovery Museum. For example, the membership link allows parents and guardians to become new members or renew memberships online. Registering to become a member or renewing a membership online requires the disclosure of your name, e-mail, phone number and address, and also requires a credit card number. We also ask parents and guardians to provide the names and birthdays of the children in their households. The mailing list link offers parents and guardians the opportunity to sign up to receive our periodic electronic newsletter, which requires disclosure of an email address, name, and mailing address. Our “Registration Form,” which is filled out to reserve the Museum for activities such as a birthday party, requires disclosure of your contact information and a credit card number.

    From time to time, we may also conduct online surveys or contests. If the online survey or contest is directed at adults, it may ask visitors for contact information (such as an e-mail address) and demographic information. We use contact data from our surveys and contests to send the user information about the organization. The user’s contact information is also used to contact the visitor when necessary. You may always opt-out of receiving future contact from the Bay Area Discovery Museum, as described in more detail in the “Choice/Opt-Out” section below.

    If the online survey or contest is directed at children, it will not request more information that the responding child’s name and e-mail address and the contact information for a parent or guardian of the child. Before further communication with the child, we will contact the parent or guardian of the child to obtain their consent to such further communication.     How We Collect Information

    As described above, we only collect personal information from our visitors when it is voluntarily disclosed, such as to sign up for memberships or to receive our electronic newsletter.

    We collect anonymous information, such as IP address or browser type, about our users, and we use cookies to track our users’ viewing behavior. The information collected is not personally attributable to any single user.

    How We Use Information

    In general, we use the personally identifiable information that is voluntarily provided to us solely for the purposes for which it is provided. In some cases, it may be necessary for us to share the information you provide to us with third parties that perform certain services on our behalf (such as sending email newsletters or processing credit card orders) and that have agreed to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of your information. Also, we sometimes exchange member names and addresses with other organizations through list exchange partnerships for the purpose of marketing exhibits and events, but never for fundraising. You may always choose to opt-out of such information sharing with third parties by e-mailing us at the address listed in the “Choice/Opt Out” section below.

    From time to time, we may share aggregate information about our website usage and traffic patterns to third parties to comply with various reporting obligations or for business or marketing purposes. Such aggregate information never contains personally identifiable information.

    Children's Use and Parental Rights

    At the Bay Area Discovery Museum, we never condition a child’s participation in an activity on the disclosure of more personally identifiable information that is reasonably necessary for the activity, and it is our policy not to collect information from users that are under the age of thirteen without the consent of their parents or guardians. If we receive a communication that indicates it is from a child under the age of thirteen, we will first contact the child’s parent or guardian to provide him or her with notice and request consent to further communication with the child.

    We are committed to helping parents and guardians maintain control over the information collected about their children.     Choice/Opt-Out

    When we request contact information on our website, we always provide users the opportunity to opt-out of receiving future communications from the Bay Area Discovery Museum.     Security

    Bay Area Discovery Museum uses security measures to protect against the loss, misuse, or alteration of your information under our control. All of our web forms make use of secure socket layer (SSL) encryption to encrypt all information during transmission, and we use a firewall to protect information stored on our server.

    Our Email Newsletter

    If you are a member and have given us your email address, we will add you to our email newsletter. If you have joined the list through our Web site, you will receive a confirmation email which you must click on to opt-in to the list. You may unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in an issue of the newsletter or by emailing contact(at)badm.org. We do not share, rent or sell our email list. We may from time to time provide an offer from another Bay Area not-for-profit organization in an issue of the email newsletter, but your email address will never be shared directly.

    Tell a Friend

    If you use the "tell a friend" or share links on our Web site, we will use the email addresses you provide only to send the email you have requested. They will not be collected or saved in any way.

    Photography Permission

    From time to time, the Bay Area Discovery Museum takes photographs and video of Museum activities and visitors for use in editorial and/or promotional material. By entering the Museum, you give permission to the Museum to record photographs or video of yourself and your dependents. You grant the Museum all rights to use these sound, still or moving images in any medium for educational, promotional, advertising or other purposes that support the mission of the Museum. All rights to the photographs or video belong to the Museum. The Museum is unable to guarantee publication of photos or video. Please let the Front Desk know if you do not consent to being photographed.

    This website provides links to several other third party websites. While we make efforts to choose our links carefully, our privacy policy does not govern those websites and we cannot take responsibility for the content or privacy practices of linked websites.

    Changes in this Privacy Policy

    From time to time, it may be necessary for the Bay Area Discovery Museum to change or update this privacy policy. The user is encouraged to review this policy periodically.
