Frequently Asked Questions
What should we expect?
The Museum is hands-on, meaning that everything is meant to be touched and used for play. Our goal is to enhance your Museum experience and introduce your group to methods of questioning and discovery to deepen your interaction with our exhibitions. The introduction program lasts approximately 20 minutes. The remainder of your time is open for free exploration of the site.
How many chaperones should I bring on this field trip?
We require one chaperone for every five children, although you are welcome to bring more. Chaperones over this ratio will be charged the same price as the students. Adults who bring younger siblings are not considered chaperones and will be charged full-price Museum admission. All chaperones must be at least 16 years of age. Please pre-arrange your children into small groups who can split up to explore the Museum.
Is there a lunch area at your Museum?
The Museum has an outdoor picnic area. You may utilize this area during your two and a half hour visit time. We can provide rolling bins to store lunches until the group is ready to eat. In the event of rain, an indoor lunch room may be available for your group. To maximize your time, you may also choose to have lunch before or after your visit. Please note there are no places outside the Museum grounds with picnic benches. Some suggested picnic areas include the waterfront, Battery Yates, or Vista Point.
Can you accommodate special needs?
Please let us know if a student or chaperone has any special needs. Entrances to all exhibit halls are wheelchair accessible. We will do our best to accommodate everyone.
How do I pay?
Payments can be made in full before arriving through our online registration system or upon arrival. 20% of your total fee is due at the time of reservation. Please have an exact head count of children and adults so you are charged the proper amount.
When should my group arrive?
We recommend you arrive approximately 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time in order to maximize your visit at the Museum. If you are running late, please call the Public Programs Coordinator at (415) 339-3916. Early arrivals will not be admitted until their scheduled arrival time.
Where do we park?
Parking is free at the Museum. If you are carpooling, you may park in the main visitor lot. If you are arriving on a bus, please unload the group in the turn around by the main entrance. A Museum staff member will come out to meet the group and give the driver directions to the bus parking.
Where do we meet the Museum staff?
Upon arrival, have your group gather in front of the Museum and send one adult to the front desk to announce your arrival. An educator will come out to meet your group and begin your program.
Which exhibits may students visit?
All groups may enjoy Bay Hall, Wave Workshop, Lookout Cove, the traveling exhibit in Discovery Hall, Studio 5 and Studio 10. We do not allow school groups to visit Tot Spot, an exhibit designed specifically for toddlers.
Are there other things in the area that we may visit while on our field trip?
If you have extra time, we suggest eating lunch in one of Fort Baker’s surrounding open spaces, taking a walk to historic Battery Yates, exploring the beaches in Horseshoe Cove, visiting the Coast Guard station or enjoying the Vista Point at the Golden Gate Bridge.
