Age-appropriate offerings
Q: What age groups does the Museum serve?
The Museum is specifically designed to serve children up to age eight. There are several areas throughout the Museum where all ages are encouraged to explore, learn and play. However, here are some offerings that were designed with specific age groups in mind:
Infants and toddlers: The Tot Spot is designed to be a safe location for infants and toddlers under 43 inches in height. Art Studio 5 is specifically geared towards children ages five and under.
Six- to eight-year-olds: Art Studio 10 is geared towards children ages six through eight. Lookout Cove also includes several elements for older children.
All ages: Bay Hall, Discovery Hall, and Lookout Cove all include appropriate activities for children up to age eight, and are ideal spaces to take families with children of multiple ages. In addition to the exhibit spaces, the Museum offers a variety of ongoing family programs and performances for all different ages.
Q: Why does Tot Spot have a height restriction?
A: Tot Spot was specifically designed to be a safe location for infants and toddlers, therefore the exhibit materials and activities were designed for small children. After extensive research, testing, and feedback, it was determined that a height restriction of 43 inches was absolutely necessary.
Q: Where should I go if I have an infant/toddler and a child over 43 inches in height?
A: The Museum is sensitive to the fact that families with children of varying heights can’t visit the Tot Spot, however children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. It is therefore recommended that families with mixed age children visit the Museum with two adult supervisors and/or take advantage of all other Museum exhibits and activities that are for mixed ages.
You may also enjoy the following new programs that have been implemented in order to alleviate some of the challenges families with multi-aged children face due to the Tot Spot safety features, such as the activity area for big kids, just outside Tot Spot. Here, big kids can enjoy supervised play while the smaller sibling and adult enjoy Tot Spot.
