What Ages?

Q: What age groups does the Museum serve?

The Museum is specifically designed to serve children up to age 8, their parents, caregivers and educators. There are several areas throughout the Museum where all ages are encouraged to explore, learn and play. However, here are some offerings that were designed with specific age groups in mind:

  • Infants and toddlers: Tot Spot is designed to be a safe location for infants and toddlers under 42 inches in height. Art Studio 5 is specifically geared towards children ages five and under.
  • 6 to 8-year-olds: Art Studio 10 is geared towards children ages 6 through 8. Lookout Cove also includes several elements for older children.
  • All ages: Bay Hall, Discovery Hall, and Lookout Cove all include appropriate activities for children up to age 8, and are ideal spaces to take families with children of multiple ages. In addition to the exhibit spaces, the Museum offers a variety of ongoing family programs and performances for all different ages.

Q: Why does Tot Spot have a height restriction?

A: Tot Spot is designed to be a safe location for infants and toddlers under 42 inches in height. The exhibit materials and activities were designed and scaled for small children. Older children are too big to use the exhibit safely. The limit makes the area safe for babies and toddlers just learning to walk and interact socially with each other.

Q: Why did you pick 42˝as the limit?

After extensive research, testing and feedback, it was determined that a height restriction of 42 inches was absolutely necessary. According to the CDC growth charts, 97% of children will be under 42” at age 3.5. Complete growth charts can be found at www.cdc.gov/GrowthCharts/.

Q: What should I tell my child? She loves Tot Spot!

Many children become too tall for Tot Spot when they near age 4. As they get close, remind them that they are getting bigger, and will “graduate” from Tot Spot soon because they’re no longer a baby, and Tot Spot is just for babies.

Q: Where should I go if I have an infant/toddler and a child over 42 inches in height?

The Museum is sensitive to the fact that one adult visiting with children of varying heights can’t visit the Tot Spot, however children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. It is therefore recommended that families with mixed age children visit the Museum with two adult supervisors and/or take advantage of all other Museum exhibits and activities that are for mixed ages.

Bay Hall, Discovery Hall, Art Studios and Lookout Cove all include appropriate activities for children up to age 8, and are ideal spaces to take families with children of multiple ages. In addition to the exhibit spaces, the Museum offers a variety of ongoing family programs and performances for all different ages.

Q: What if I'm visiting with my much older child and his/her infant sibling?

Children over the age of our designated age range (9+) can receive a Tot Spot helper sticker and information from our Discovery Educators on how to appropriately accompany their younger siblings into Tot Spot.

Q: Do you allow adults without children on site?

A: No. All adults must be accompanied by children. If you would like to visit in a professional capacity without children - for example as a journalist, educator or museum professional, you must contact staff in advance of your visit to request a tour. View our staff listing or email contact(at)badm.org.

Q: Who can I talk to if I need additional information about your policies?

Please contact Scott Dahlman, Director of Operations; he is responsible for safety on our site, and can be reached at (415) 339-3908 or sdahlman(at)badm.org.
