Volunteer on the Discovery Council

If you’re interested in joining a group of dedicated volunteers who give their time and talents to support the Bay Area Discovery Museum, the Discovery Council is the place for you.

What is the Discovery Council?

The Discovery Council supports the Museum’s mission to ignite and advance creative thinking for all children. In addition to providing volunteer opportunities to its members, the Council offers young families a chance to meet one another, learn from the Museum’s research-based early childhood education platform, and have fun by supporting the Museum.

By joining the Discovery Council, each member commits to:

  • Maintaining a Discovery Council Membership. Discovery Council members receive a $25 discount on Supporting Family Memberships.
  • Serving one three-year term on the Council.
  • Attending Monthly Meetings. Meetings are important and attendance is required. There are no Council meetings held in June, July and August.
  • Volunteering. Council members represent the Museum and are the face of our Volunteer Corps. Each year, Council members volunteer each of the following ways:
    • Goblin Jamboree: Members are required to serve on a committee and to volunteer for two four-hour shifts during the Goblin event/weekend.
    • Participate in one school group visit at the Museum: School group visits take place October through June, 4 days a week, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and last an hour and a half.
    • Playdate: Council members are required to serve on one Playdate event committee: Beverage, Decoration or Collateral. Committee Co-Chairs determine additional details.
  • Attend and/or Support Fundraising Events and Fundraising Initiatives. Council members are expected to purchase tickets and attend the Museum’s three annual fundraising events: Goblin Sponsor Breakfast at Goblin Jamboree with their families; Creativity Forum; and our annual gala, Playdate. In addition, some Council members choose to make the Museum part of their annual giving–supporting the Museum’s Discovery Circle or Annual Fund, while others help us establish relationships with corporate sponsors.

A new Council member orientation is held every January, however, new members may join the Council at any time. For more information, please contact:
