Part Time Discovery Guide
The Bay Area Discovery Museum, located at historic Fort Baker in Sausalito, is a unique educational institution and popular destination for over 280,000 children and adults who visit annually. SUMMARY
The Bay Area Discovery Museum provides children ages 1-8, their parents, educators and caregivers with innovative, hands-on programs. Discovery Guides professional educators who are responsible for teaching, facilitating and presenting interdisciplinary arts, science and exhibit related programs for the Museum’s visitors. The position is also responsible for operating the front desk – handling admissions and welcoming visitors. This position reports directly to the Interpretive Staff Manager.
RESPONSIBILTIES - Interact with visitors throughout indoor and outdoor exhibit areas and at front desk. Exhibit activities include painting, crafts, building, water play, animal observation and nature exploration.
- Greet and teach school groups, community groups, and drop-in programs.
- Prepare, maintain and clean up program materials, program spaces and exhibit halls.
- Maintain a safe, friendly, orderly, and welcoming environment.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, teachers, students, parents, other museum staff and visitors.
- Perform cashier duties at the Front Desk, handling cash, check, and credit card transactions.
- Other duties as required by Interpretive Staff Manager or Lead Guides.
QUALIFICATIONS - Expertise or interest in arts, science, early childhood programs or guest services
- Previous teaching or experience working with children
- Must be able to perform physical activities such as bending, moving around and picking up items for 2-3 hours at a time and to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. short distances
- Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic computer literacy
- Bilingual skills preferred
- Ability to speak/ teach in front of large and small groups of visitors
- Ability to work comfortably in a team, as well as independently
- Willingness to learn and a strong desire to support the Museum’s mission
Part- Time positions available, includes working weekends. Employee Benefits: Health, Dental and 403B plan, pro-rated for part time employees. Starting salary: $10-11.35/hour
